Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe’s Pickin’ & Paddlin’ @ Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe
Jul 25 @ 3:00 pm

FREE Demos will run from 3 – 6 pm

Years ago some of Bend’s whitewater crew began having little get-togethers after a long day of work and paddling. You can picture it? A little fire pit, some barbecue and beverages, combined with some Blue Grass styled funky jams? This is the Pickin’ &’ Paddlin’ movement. What started out as few friends sharing songs and stories on the banks of the Deschutes has remained true to its roots, and grown through the years. The vibe is inspiring and motivating. The event has become one of Bend’s most popular evenings.

Despite it’s humble beginnings, this event has become a huge community celebration helping raise funds for Bend Paddle Trail Alliance (BPTA). The BPTA is on a mission to establish a navigable “paddle trail” within Deschutes County, to enhance river and lake recreation opportunities and promote water safety, education and stewardship.

The Outside Games had a chance to speak with Jason Bowerman from the BPTA, and given that he is also one of Bend’s most recognized musicians, we felt it would be appropriate to have him describe the vibe and energy at the event.

“Everyone has a great time at Pickin’ and Paddlin’ from young children up through grandparents. The bands especially love the home-grown feel and intimate connection they feel with the audience; feeding on the crowd energy once the sun goes down and the dancing begins. Its no wonder that many locals say that in a calendar stuffed with events, this is the one they try not to miss.”

Concert line-up:

Headline Band is: The Ben Larsen Band
Openers:  Skillet Head,  Pete Kartsounes (solo sets)
Special Guests: CJ Neary (fiddle), Benji Nagel (Dobro)

Tickets are pre-sold in order to manage capacity. Pre-sale tickets are available through the Tumalo Creek website only and will soon be available. Bring your receipt and ID to get in. There will be a limited number of tickets available at the door on a first come first serve basis. This popular event will sell out so please purchase tickets early!

Please Walk, Bike, or Carpool!

Parking is extremely limited at this popular event. Help us reduce our impact on our neighbors by taking alternative transportation. There will be additional bike racks available for your convenience. Parking alternatives: from the Pavilion or Miller’s Landing and walk past the Bend Whitewater Park and under the new tunnel (also known as The Portal to Pickin’).

Rubblebucket FREE CONCERT with MOsley WOtta & the Breaking @ Century Center

In summer 2015, after finishing a year of intense touring, Rubblebucket’s Kalmia Traver and Alex Toth began the process of bringing their next record to life. As an experiment, Kalmia asked Alex (her longtime romantic partner) to move out while they worked on the album, then accepted the marriage proposal he made during a recording session just a month later.Although Alex soon moved back in, their 11-year relationship ended when the two chose to ‘consciously uncouple’ the following spring—a decision theyhonored by ceremoniously giving each other matching triangular daisy tattoos (a nod to the title track from Rubblebucket’s 2010 EP). But despite all the sadness brought on by their breakup, Kalmia and Alex kept on writing and recording together, ultimately creating Rubblebucket’s most transcendent album to date.

Co-produced by Kalmia and Alex, Sun Machine documents the pain of ending their romantic relationship, yet emerges as an unbridled and often-euphoric celebration of their lasting connection. While the breakup inspired much of the album, Sun Machine is deeply informed by several other life-changing occurrences in recent years: Kalmia’s diagnosis with ovarian cancer in 2013 (followed by a round of surgeries and chemo treatments), Alex’s decision to get sober after a long struggle with alcoholism, and the couple’s three-year-long attempt at maintaining an open relationship. The result is a strange and beautiful paradox: a party album rooted in radical mindfulness, a breakup record imbued with each partner’s palpable love for the other.

From song to song, Rubblebucket infuse Sun Machinewith a sweetness and generosity that speak to the devotion behind their conscious uncoupling, a process Kalmia defines as “signaling to the world that you’re doing everything you can to preserve the relationship.” With Alex describing their breakup as “the single-most significant life event beyond me being born,” both band members hope that Sun Machineencourages others to see the possibility for transformation in painful experiences of all kinds. “When I got cancer and Alex quit drinking, that was the beginning of a huge journey for both of us,” says Kalmia. “So much of that journey has been about giving myself the freedom to exist on my own terms, believing in my ideas instead of self-editing. I think this album represents both of us allowing ourselves that freedom in a totally new way, and hopefully it’ll give people inspiration to be creative in their own lives, and to just soften up a bit too.”

The Breaking BIO

Alternative rock revivalists The Breaking stepped straight out of 1995. Mining the rich soundscape of mid-’90s guitar pop, the band draws inspiration from seminal acts like Failure, R.E.M., Soundgarden and early Radiohead, where brooding introspection gives way to anthemic choruses and infectious electric guitar hooks.

At once original and strikingly familiar, The Breaking crafts songs with mass appeal that remain firmly rooted in the alt rock tradition of the Cascadian glory days.

With frequent trips up and down the west coast, the band has shared the stage with acts like The Sherlocks, Avi Buffalo, Floater, Lemolo, Everest, Aaron Lee Tasjan and The Domestics.
